Moving From Windows to Kubuntu Linux

Moving from windows to kubuntu Linux

Why?

My reason is simple, I hate Windows 10. Windows 7 is the last best Windows till now.

I tried ubuntu, Linux mint but didn’t like the different desktop environments installed by default. And honestly, I broke the system more than once because I didn’t understand how linux worked, how to fix things, what you shouldn’t do, where to find help, who to trust for good advise, etc… And recently tried kubuntu, ubuntu with the kde desktop environment, and I have to say it was very good. And since I learned a lot about linux since last year using yunohost, I’m a lot more confortable with the OS.

What issues I have had?

Installing a Linux system in a Windows network is very tricky. Since all my other pcs are running on Windows, I had hard time to make them work together correctly. And I couldn’t install Linux on all of them at the same time. So the transition required to have them together in the same network.

  • Issue 2 : was browsing the shared folders of the different computers running windows from the new Linux pc. There was no easy way to do it. And I was confused since Linux couldn’t discover windows computers out of the box and I had to give the ip address for every single computer. Moreover, each shared folder in windows will have its own mount. I have about 8 shared folders in one laptop, so I’ll have to set up 8 mounts for this particular computer. I will end having 20 mounts instead of 5 computers. Fixed following these tutorials : Show Windows Hostnames in Ubuntu Linux and Mounting Smb Windows Shares in Linux

  • Issue 3 : french keyboard in Linux is a little bit confusing. Since caps lock behave differently from Windows, Windows users will be annoyed. In Windows, caps lock makes the numeric line write numbers, in Linux, you have to push down shift to get numbers. Not very easy to use. See Patch MS Keyboard Behaviour for Linux

  • Issue 4 : finding a good alternative to every software I was using under windows.

I’m having fun learning new things about Linux. The move from Windows is not easy. I already resigned more than once in making the jump. The main reasons were
